An understanding person is not one who can empathize with the other,but one who can sympathize.When you're empathetic,you see yourself in the other person's shoes,identify with him and understand him(and indirectly,yourself because you've been there,done that).The greatness lies in not having been there,not having done that,but still being able to understand him for who he is.This is the foundation of an authentic relationship.
